The TARDIS has hit some major wibbly wobbly, timey wimey shit before but has always come up on top - until now. The BBC has officially confirmed that much loved showrunner and nerd daddy, Russell T Davies has peaced out from Doctor Who yet again, ending his second stint overseeing the iconic sci-fi franchise.

Alongside the announcement came another swift kick to the nads: the planned 2026 Christmas Special has been cancelled too, despite the jaw-dropping Disney+ finale cliffhanger that saw Billie Piper appear following Ncuti Gatwa's dynamic regeneration.
The cancellation left fans beyond devo, with a massive unanswered question. Is Billie Piper the Sixteenth Doctor, a returning Rose Tyler, or something else entirely? The now-axed special was widely expected to provide answers, but no script had been completed and no lead actor had been cast before the project was cast into the void.
In case you forgot, or simply love living in holes, here's a clip of Ncuti Gatwa regeneration into Billie Piper below curtousty of The BBC/Disney. Enjoy heaux.
However unlike the last days of Gallifrey, not all is lost - The BBC says Doctor Who is not ending. Instead, the series is being put out to tender as the broadcaster searches for a new creative team and production partners following the departures of Davies and Bad Wolf Productions. The phallicly named corporation insists the move is designed to secure the show's long-term future - like if Doctor Who hasn't been on the air for 62 years.
So what happens next? Only Omega knows. Some reports suggest a Billie Piper-led special could eventually surface sometime in 2027, while others believe the franchise may take an extended hiatus while a new showrunner charts a fresh course.
For now, Doctor Who finds itself in a familiar position: uncertain, controversial, and completely unpredictable. If history has taught Whovians anything, it's that the Doctor always comes back. The only question is who will be piloting the TARDIS when that happens.
Personally I'd be super down for an Alex Kingston headlined season. We need our favorite sociopathic child of the TARDIS River Song to take us to some crazy ass destinations and wildly up Doctor Who's body count.

Are you primo bummed to see both Russell T Davies and the Doctor Who Christmas special bounce on the same day? Where would you love to see the sci-fi staple venture next?
