Sony held their June State of Play and they did not come to play around. Twenty-three game announcements, a Wolverine that actually looks like it'll slap, a brand new God of War entry, and something called "ILL" that might be the most unhinged thing to come out of a PlayStation showcase in years. If you blinked, you missed something real. Here's the full breakdown.
Marvel's Wolverine kicked things off with new gameplay footage and Insomniac is not letting you forget who they are. The combat looks brutal in the best way, claws tearing through enemies, that gritty, grounded tone they've been going for. They put pre-orders live the second the trailer ended, which tells you everything about how confident they are in this one. If Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 taught us anything, it's that Insomniac doesn't miss on Marvel properties. Pre-orders are open right now if you want to lock it in early.
A new God of War. That's it. That's the sentence. God of War Laufey was announced and the internet immediately lost its mind ... and rightfully so. Laufey is Loki's mother in Norse mythology, meaning Santa Monica Studio is diving even deeper into that world after Ragnarök wrapped the saga in a way that felt pretty damn final. The fact that they've got more story to tell is either really exciting or a sign that they're not done mining this universe. Either way, we're in. No details on a release window yet, but the name alone is enough to get people talking.
Sony called it "potentially the most violent game ever made" and that's from their own showcase stage. ILL showed up and immediately made the room uncomfortable in the best possible way. It's the kind of game that makes content warnings sweat through their shirt. Details are sparse right now but when a major publisher puts you on a State of Play stage with that description, you don't ignore it. This one goes on the watchlist immediately.
The horror kids ate well at this showcase. Silent Hill: Townfall got more attention, the franchise refuses to die and honestly, long may it continue. Until Dawn 2 was announced for 2027, and if it leans into what made the original a cult classic slasher experience and goes harder, it could be something special. Two major horror franchises in one showcase. Not bad, Sony.
Here's what else got announced, because there's genuinely no way to skim past this list:
Onimusha: Way of the Sword: Capcom bringing back one of the most slept-on franchises in gaming history. The original Onimusha games were incredible and this had better respect that legacy.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis: 2027 release with deluxe edition details already revealed. Lara Croft is not retiring.
Phantom Blade Zero: Locked in an October 29, 2026 release date and showed more action footage. This one has been quietly building hype and the new content looks sharp.
Rayman Legends: Retold: Wait. Rayman? In 2026? An official remaster of one of the best platformers ever made and it showed up completely out of nowhere. The nostalgia just clotheslined us.
Control Resonant: The Control universe is expanding and we need to know more right now. -
Dune: Awakening: The survival MMO set in the Dune universe keeps getting airtime. If you're not watching this one, start.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls: Knights of Doom confirmed. A Marvel fighting game. Fine, okay, we'll bite.
No Rest For The Wicked, Marathon Season 2, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, Bancho The Chef, Kemuri: Hunt The Unseen, Stuntman: Hollywood, The Lost Wild, Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered: all in there too.
Sony came to play. Wolverine is the obvious headliner and that's going to get all the clicks and attention it deserves. But honestly? The thing living rent-free in our heads is ILL. A game described as the most violent game ever made at a major PlayStation showcase is a bold-ass move and we're dying to see what they actually mean by that. God of War Laufey is a close second, nobody saw that coming today.
